Sweeteners like Splenda, Equal, NutraSweet, Sweet-n-Low are common in diet drinks and packaged foods—but just because they’re widely used doesn’t mean they’re harmless. Studies have linked them to gut disruption, blood sugar issues, and changes in appetite and insulin response. Aspartame in NutraSweet, has raised particular concern due to how it breaks down in the body and possible effects on the brain.

Natural alternatives like allulose, stevia, and monk fruit offer sweetness without the metabolic confusion or gut disruption linked to artificial sweeteners.

Monk Fruit - But Watch Out for Erythritol

Monk fruit is a natural, zero-calorie sweetener made from a small Asian fruit. Its antioxidants (mogrosides) give it sweetness without raising blood sugar or insulin. 

Note: Many monk fruit sweeteners are blended with erythritol to match sugar’s texture and sweetness. A 2023 study in Nature Medicine found that people with high blood levels of erythritol had a significantly higher risk of heart attack and stroke—especially those already at cardiovascular risk. Researchers believe erythritol may make platelets more likely to clot, which could contribute to these events.
