together starts to need more attention. Joints that were silent begin to speak up. Sleep changes.
Recovery takes longer.
None of this is failure. It's physiology — and it's manageable.
Here's what I've come to understand after spending a lot of time in the research: the body after 40 is not declining so much as it's changing its requirements. What worked on autopilot at 30 needs a little more support at 45. And there's a genuinely impressive body of research behind certain supplements that can provide exactly that — filling gaps that even a good diet can leave, supporting systems that are working harder than they used to, and helping the body do what it was always designed to do.
Food is still your foundation. It always will be. But these seven supplements have real science behind them — not wellness trends, not marketing claims. Research. And after 40, they're worth knowing about.
Seven Supplements Worth Knowing After 40
Multivitamin
Even when you're eating well, gaps show up. After 40, most of us naturally eat a little less than we did in our 30s — which means fewer micronutrients, even with good intentions. A quality multivitamin is one of the simplest ways to make sure the small, consistent shortfalls don't accumulate quietly over time. It's not doing the heavy lifting. It's making sure nothing important gets missed.
Look for one with methylated B vitamins — especially methylfolate rather than folic acid — and avoid synthetic dyes and fillers. The form of the nutrients matters as much as the nutrients themselves.
Magnesium
This is the one I come back to most often when people describe feeling off in ways they can't quite name. Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body — sleep regulation, muscle function, blood sugar control, stress response. And most adults aren't getting enough of it. Soil depletion has reduced magnesium content in food significantly over the past several decades, which means even people eating leafy greens and nuts are often still running low.
The signs tend to be subtle: trouble falling asleep, waking in the night, muscle cramps, that wired-but-tired feeling in the evening, fatigue that doesn't resolve with rest. I've heard this described so many times that I've stopped being surprised when magnesium is the missing piece.
Magnesium glycinate is gentle on digestion and well absorbed — a good starting point for most people. Magnesium threonate crosses the blood-brain barrier more effectively and has promising research behind it for cognitive support. Either is significantly better than magnesium oxide, which is what you'll find in most inexpensive supplements and which absorbs poorly.
CoQ10
Your body produces CoQ10 naturally to help cells generate energy — it's essential to the process that happens in mitochondria, the energy-producing structures inside every cell. Production declines meaningfully after 40, which is one reason energy can start to feel different even when nothing else has obviously changed.
If you take a statin medication for cholesterol, this one becomes more urgent. Statins reduce CoQ10 levels as a side effect — it's a biochemical consequence of how they work, not a rare occurrence.
Supplementing CoQ10 alongside a statin is something worth discussing with your doctor.
Look for ubiquinol rather than ubiquinone on the label. Ubiquinol is the active, reduced form — better absorbed, particularly for people over 50. The difference in absorption is meaningful enough that it's worth paying attention to.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
EPA and DHA — the omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish and quality fish oil — have one of the strongest and most consistent bodies of research in the supplement world. Heart health, inflammation, brain function, mood, joint stiffness — the evidence across all of these is genuinely substantial.
What I find most compelling about omega-3s after 40 is the inflammation piece. Chronic low-grade inflammation is the common thread running through so many of the conditions that become more common in this decade — joint issues, cardiovascular concerns, metabolic changes, cognitive shifts. Most
Western diets are heavily skewed toward omega-6 fats and light on omega-3s. That imbalance drives inflammation in ways that compound quietly over time. Rebalancing it — through food, through supplementation, or both — is one of the more meaningful things you can do.
Fatty fish two to three times a week is the ideal. Salmon, sardines, mackerel, anchovies — these are the ones with the highest EPA and DHA content. If that's not realistic in your regular eating, a quality fish oil or algae-based omega-3 supplement fills the gap well.
Creatine
If there's one supplement on this list that consistently surprises people, it's this one. Creatine has a reputation built around gym culture and young athletes — and that reputation has obscured some genuinely exciting research for people over 40.
After 40, we begin losing muscle mass at roughly one to two percent per year without actively working to counter it. That loss isn't just about strength or appearance — it affects metabolism, insulin sensitivity, bone density, and how well the body handles aging across the board. Creatine monohydrate, taken consistently and combined with resistance training, is one of the most evidence-backed tools available to slow that process. The research is not ambiguous on this.
What's newer and particularly interesting is the cognitive research. Several studies suggest creatine supplementation supports working memory and mental performance, particularly under stress or sleep deprivation. The mechanism makes sense — the brain uses creatine for energy the same way muscles do.
Creatine monohydrate is the form to look for — it's the most researched, the most affordable, and works as well or better than more expensive proprietary forms.
Turmeric / Curcumin
Turmeric has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Modern research has been working to understand why — and the findings around curcumin, the active compound, are genuinely compelling.
Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and with emerging evidence around joint health, brain health, and mood.
For people over 40 dealing with joint discomfort, morning stiffness, or the kind of inflammation that shows up as general achiness that wasn't there before, this one is worth trying. I've heard from enough people who noticed a real difference that I take the anecdotal evidence seriously — and the mechanistic research gives it credibility.
One practical thing worth knowing: curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. It needs piperine — the active compound in black pepper — to be properly absorbed. A supplement that includes piperine, or one that uses a phospholipid delivery system like Meriva, will work significantly better than plain curcumin powder. Using turmeric generously in cooking is wonderful — golden milk, curries, roasted vegetables with a crack of black pepper — but for therapeutic levels, a well-formulated supplement is worth adding alongside it.
Vitamin D3
Most people over 40 are deficient in Vitamin D. Not borderline — actually deficient. And most don't know it, because the symptoms are easy to attribute to other things: fatigue, low mood, muscle weakness, getting sick more often than you used to.
Vitamin D3 is critical for bone density, immune function, mood regulation, and muscle strength. It also works closely with magnesium — the two are interdependent in ways that mean being low in one can undermine the other. If you're going to take D3, take it with K2 as well. D3 increases calcium absorption from food; K2 directs that calcium into bones rather than depositing it in arteries. That pairing matters more than most supplement labels make clear.
The reality for most people over 40, particularly in northern climates or with limited sun exposure, is that food and sun alone aren't going to get levels where they need to be — especially through winter months.
This is one supplement where I'd encourage getting your levels tested if you haven't. It takes a simple blood test and gives you a much clearer picture of where you actually stand.
Where to Start
If this list feels like a lot, start with two: magnesium and vitamin D3. Those are the most commonly deficient, the most impactful across multiple systems, and the ones with the most immediate effect on how you feel day to day. Get those in place, give them six to eight weeks, and see what shifts. Then layer in what makes sense for you.
Pay attention to how you feel. Not in a hypervigilant way — just notice. Most of these work gradually rather than dramatically. The shift is more often a quiet improvement in baseline than a single noticeable moment.
And talk to your doctor, especially if you're on medication. Not because these supplements are dangerous, but because some interact with common prescriptions in ways worth knowing — and because getting a baseline blood panel can tell you a lot about where your gaps actually are.
The Bottom Line
After 40, a little targeted support can go a long way. The changes you're feeling are real — and so is the research behind what helps. These seven aren't a promise of restored health or a substitute for everything else. They're what I've found, through years of reading the research and paying attention to my own experience, to be genuinely worth taking seriously.
Start somewhere. Give it time. Your body is still very much capable of responding — it just needs the right materials to work with.
